Restart went hands-on with this new Roblox experience before launch.

Pac-Man has officially come to Roblox thanks to Pac-Man Simulator, a new experience from Bandai Namco and virtual world creator Supersocial. Now available in closed beta, Restart had the chance to try the game before its big debut.

Pac-Man Simulator follows the trend of other “simulator” games on the Roblox platform (see, for instance, SpongeBob Simulator) in that it allows players to collect a variety of costumed Pac-Man characters who will automatically eat pellets (the series’ white dots) found on top of the game’s maze surface to build up the player’s strength, or "power."

As players collect power points, they can battle the four main ghosts from the Pac-Man universe: Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde, with each ghost having a different recommended power for players to reach before they should try taking them on.

Battles last only a few seconds and ask players to click as fast as possible to fill a bar at the bottom of the screen (sort of like a game of arm wrestling). When players win, they’ll receive trophies they can spend on capsules containing new Pac-Man characters, which are called "pets" in Pac-Man Simulator.

Each type of capsule contains a limited number of possible pet prizes, with some being rarer than others. During our demo, we saw a number of creative and adorable pets that are up for grabs, like Pac-Man dressed as a cat, and Pac-Man wearing a top hat and monocle. With a limited number of unique helpers being obtainable from each capsule type, players will undoubtedly collect duplicates, and they can merge these extras whenever they collect five of the same type.

If players save up their trophies, they’ll eventually collect enough to unlock the next environment, with six worlds being accessible at launch. While players will start their adventure in an arcade world, other worlds feature environments like a western town and a spooky house. Additional worlds will also be added post-launch.

The game’s basic setup remains the same in each world, though pellets will become more valuable, ghosts will require more power to defeat, and capsules will become more expensive as players move from one world to the next. Players will be free to backtrack and visit previous worlds if they want to collect more pets or simply look for the hidden coins scattered through each location.

While Pac-Man Simulator will officially launch as a free-to-play experience, it currently costs 99 Robux to access during its closed beta period. The game also offers a variety of premium content, including permanent upgrades that can improve the gameplay experience and special capsules containing exclusive pets, like some that appear to be made of diamonds. Themed UGC will also be added in the future.

In addition to adding UGC, Supersocial plans to introduce a trading system in Pac-Man Simulator to give players the chance to own the game's special pets without spending real money.

Yon Raz-Fridman, founder and CEO of Supersocial, told Restart:

"As we continue to update the Pac-Man Simulator in the coming months, we will add a trading feature to the gameplay. This will allow players to barter their way to the top of the scoreboard, making the experience more strategic, interactive, and overall fair. We want everyone to feel as though they have an equal opportunity to succeed at the game and want to encourage player interactions within the experience.”

Pac-Man Simulator is expected to officially launch before the end of 2024.
